It's tough to be a kid these days! There are so many pitfalls to look out for. Danger seems to be lurking around every corner - whether it's on the streets or on the Internet, trouble awaits. One topic on every parent's mind these days is Bullying. Does it feel like bullying is everywhere in our society? Not just the threat of physical violence, but emotional or psychological harm, too?
That's why Allen Park's Lindemann Elementary PTA and Allen Park Martial Arts Center recently teamed up to say NO to random acts of bullying, and YES to random acts of kindness! Tae Kwon Do teachers, along with some of their karate students from Allen Park Martial Arts Center gave a high energy, anti-bullying/pro-kindness talk and demonstration to the entire Lindemann Elementary student body. The kids learned how to recognize different types of bullying behavior, and how to diffuse that behavior using verbal skills, tone, and confidence. They also learned the difference between "tattling" and "reporting" of dangerous behavior. And yes, they got to see some cool karate demonstrations!
The children learned all about practicing Random Acts of Kindness - to each other, their teachers, and their families and friends. Instead of making fun of, laughing at, or isolating their peers, they learned the benefits of being a "magnet of good." As a way to facilitate putting these behaviors into practice, each child received a (voluntary) "Kindness Journal" to record up to 20 Random Acts of Kindness. For those who submit their completed journals (and get parent permission), we will have a free, kids party at the Allen Park Martial Arts Center, to recognize and reward their efforts!
At Allen Park Martial Arts Center, we support our area schools, their teachers, staff, and Parent/Teacher Associations! We love to partner with the schools and other community organizations in our area. Together, we can help build a stronger and better community in which to work and live. While it may be tough to be a kid these days, we can all help to better prepare our children for a bright future. What could be more important?
A special thank you to the Lindemann Elementary PTA, as well as the administrators, teachers, and staff of Allen Park Public Schools. Also, to the instructors and Allen Park Martial Arts students who helped to demonstrate at the assembly, "you rock!"
