The only way to be successful at your board break is to combine mental focus, proper technique, and intensity – while at the same time overcoming your fear that striking the wood could somehow hurt your body. Take this tension and add the anxiety of potential public failure – and you create the ultimate feeling of vulnerability!
Facing the vulnerability of moving outside of your comfort zone – and then accomplishing your goal is what leads to improved self-confidence. It’s like a magic formula. Set a new goal, put yourself at risk emotionally, accomplish the goal and you become more self-confident! Simple? Yes. Easy? No! It’s not natural for people to “put themselves out there” and take risks. That’s why it’s very important to have caring teachers and mentors who encourage and support you to move outside of your comfort zone and discover new experiences. This is especially true for children!
It doesn’t take children long to experience the feelings of being teased and laughed at when they fail at an activity, game or task. Feel this a few times and you lose the will to take risks and attempt new activities! As teachers and coaches it’s our responsibility to create a safe and supportive environment, and then use our influence to encourage emotional risk taking and overcoming the fear of failure. Having competent, caring adults to teach, encourage, and then cheer kids on as they experience success (and to console and cheer them up when they misstep) is what leads kids to develop into successful young adults!

Just because we are called Allen Park Martial Arts Center doesn’t mean we only have members from the city of Allen Park, Michigan! As a matter of fact we are one of the most well known and acclaimed “karate schools Downriver!” For close to 17 years, we have been teaching martial arts (Tae Kwon Do, self-defense, kickboxing and more) to members from all over the area – including Taylor, Melvindale, Lincoln Park, Dearborn, Wyandotte, Woodhaven, Riverview, Southgate, Flat Rock – you name it! What do people look for in a fitness center experience? Some people will definitely be attracted to the biggest fitness facility they can find. They like the idea of having lots of weight machines, cardio equipment, and tons of people around where they can be anonymous. Others however are looking for something different. Maybe they want to be more interactive and engaged? Maybe they don’t like being “ogled” over? Or, maybe they just want something different?
At Allen Park Martial Arts Center, we provide a completely different fitness experience. Our classes are highly interactive – lead by Black Belt fitness instructors. At our core, we offer a “Martial Arts Fitness Class,” that features an instructor-coached workout to high-energy music three times per week. The class includes heavy bags, punching mitts, kicking shields, floor exercises, plyo-metrics (jumping), and much, much more. There is a ton of variety – and lots of encouragement and coaching! Picture The Biggest Loser meets Insanity and P90X! We also make it easy for new beginners to join in and go at their own pace without slowing down the pros. Everyone loves this class!
Additionally, we offer a toning class (with hand weights). “Body-Sculpt” is 30 minutes twice per week, and our clients tell us they love the easy in and out of a full body workout in such a short time commitment.
