Allen Park Martial Arts Center teaches a lot more than just blocking, punching and kicking! We are committed to building a better community "one Black Belt at a time!" With Christmas and the New Year right around the corner, what better time to give something back to our community than right now? The members, families, friends, and staff of Allen Park Martial Arts Center raised almost $1300 that will go to providing holiday food baskets for those in need in the greater Allen Park area. Additionally, we collected loads of brand new winter coats, scarves, gloves, and hats to donate as well. The donations were raised through our "Break-A-Thon Fundraiser." Caring individuals pledged $5 per board for their APMAC member to break. Everyone had a blast either breaking boards or cheering on their loved ones! Kids especially benefited as they learned the joy of giving. When we announced the grand total raised through their efforts, one child shouted, "Thirteen Hundred Dollars! That's going to help a lot of families!!"
Please enjoy the short compilation video of the Break-A-Thon Fundraiser board breaking below -- and pay close attention to the joyful expressions in the room! A special thank you goes out to our members, their families, our staff, and all of the friends of Allen Park Martial Arts Center for your contributions to this effort!
With the holiday season in full swing, we often find ourselves enjoying the comforts of the season – family, friends, food, fun, and festivities - things that in a perfect world, everyone would be able to enjoy. Yet we know that this simply isn’t a perfect world. Unfortunately, this happy and often joyous time can be very stressful for some. Whether it is the stress of staying warm through the cold, Michigan winter, finding affordable and available hot food for the season, or even just the added pressure of ensuring that the season is still a wonderful time for kids and loved ones, times can be toughest when they’re supposed to be the happiest.
Often, we are cognizant of these pressures, but force ourselves to envision them affecting the most unfortunate in the inner parts of any big city. The truth, however, is that you probably know people facing these stresses in Allen Park, Taylor, Dearborn, Woodhaven, Southgate and all throughout the Downriver Metro Detroit area. Families in our neighborhoods, struggling to keep joy alive when it seems like an impossible task.
For these reasons the Allen Park Martial Arts Center will be collecting charitable donations for a good cause. When we first proposed our Break-a-thon on The Allen Parker Facebook group we got a great response! Our Break-a-thon, scheduled for Saturday, December 14th at 1:30 pm, is a fun way to donate to a great cause. All proceeds from the break-a-thon will go towards the purchase of turkeys to be placed in holiday gift baskets, which will be distributed through Allen Park and the neighboring communities via Grace Church of Allen Park. Additionally, throughout all December we are asking students and parents to bring in new gloves, hats, scarves, and coats to be placed throughout the church network, and which will be available for free to anyone in need. Our idea is that each $5 pledge will buy one board for a martial arts student to break at the event! We hope that this will be a great way to help our students build confidence, show off some cool moves, and feel great about helping others in their community.
It was through The Allen Parker that we first heard about the Grace Church network and its programs throughout Allen Park and the surrounding Downriver communities. While the group provided several great suggestions for charities and donation centers in the area, we like Grace Church because it focused on helping those in our communities. It focused on helping those people you know who are facing the stresses of the season in and around Allen Park. Finally, our students can really understand the impact that they can have on those around them by helping to donate tangible items like food and clothing.
Students will be collecting donations throughout the community for the next two weeks, so if one comes to your door, and you have a little extra to help someone else in need, please show some support! Additionally, Allen Park Martial Arts Center, located at 7318 Park Ave, has a donation box inside for hats, gloves, and scarves, in addition to extra pledge sheets for donations to the break-a-thon! For any questions about this post, donations, or programs, please call us at 313-928-5288.
I consider myself very lucky for having family, friends, food, and fun to celebrate the holidays, and I’m sure many of you reading this feel the same. However, this season, please do remember that not everyone is as fortunate. If you have anything extra, if you have the ability to make someone else’s holiday season better, I challenge you to try and find a way that you can contribute. Whether it be through a program like our break-a-thon, through volunteering time at a local shelter or support center, or even just giving extra smiles to those you see throughout the day, every bit of your effort helps!
From my family to yours, happy holidays!
